David Risbridger

Experience

David served as Head of Dispute Resolution for the Middle East at Simmons & Simmons for many years. He now focuses on independent arbitrator appointments and has arbitrated major disputes at the ICC, Dubai Internaional Arbitration Center, and multiple ad-hoc arbitrations.

During a 40 year career, he has worked alongside many high-profile clients including major governments and international contractors and has negotiated and drafted some of the most complex, high value construction and engineering contracts to be found anywhere in the world.

He has a keen focus on how disputes can arise and how they can be successfully managed. His original background as a quantity surveyor gives him a unique insight on quantum issues. He has lectured extensively on arbitration and was formerly a visiting lecturer on arbitration at the British University in Dubai.

Expertise

David specializes in major projects and engineering work advising on all the issues related to the procurement of major projects and the disputes which arise from such projects. He advises on PPP projects, with a particular focus on the energy, transport and petrochemical sectors. He has a particular interest in quantum issues.

He has written widely on procurement issues and how major projects can avoid disputes. He understands the various causes of disputes on major projects, the dynamics that can occur to destabilise such projects and approaches to maintain success even in high-risk contracting situations.

Qualifications

David holds a Masters Degree in Construction Law and Arbitration from Kings College London and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is a solicitor and trained originally as a quantity surveyor. He holds a BSc in Quantity Surveying.
